OM-4 와의 아침 산책 (2)



이 친구 Olympus OM-4 는 1983년 태어난다.
OM system 의 대표주자로서 여러가지 새로운 것들을 갖추었지만, 가장 큰 특징이라면 일반적인 중앙집중 노출방식 뿐만 아니라, 새로운 개념의 'Multi-Spot' 노출방식을 처음으로 적용한 것이었다.



카메라백과사전 (www.camerapedia.org) 에 의하면,
a "Multi Spot" metering system allows storage of up to eight measurements on a 2% central spot before making an exposure. The camera's computer electronics calculate the mean of the memorized light values to determine the optimal shutter speed.
멀티스팟 노출씨스템은 노출에 앞서 2%의 중앙 스팟 + 최대 8 군데까지의 노출값을 저장 가능케 하고, 카메라의 중앙연산장치는 최적의 셧터 스피드를 결정하기 위해 저장된 모든 노출값의 평균을 계산해내는 방식이다.



The OM-4 was released at about the same time as the Nikon FA, which introduced matrix metering. The two systems were innovative but quite different:
OM-4 는 matrix-metering system 을 채용한 Nikon FA 와 거의 동시에 발매되었는데, 두 씨스템은 매우 혁신적이면서도 또 서로 매우 많이 달랐다.



The OM-4 provides spot measurements and does the necessary computations, but it lets the photographer determine how he wants the picture to be exposed, while the FA compares the light pattern of the picture with a databank of commonly-occurring photographic situations, allowing the photographer to work faster and even palliating his knowledge deficiencies and actually beginning to think for him.
즉, OM-4 는 부분노출 측정을 하고 필요한 계산도 자동으로 되지만, 최종적인 노출은 촬영하는 사람이 결정할 수 있도록 한 씨스템이었던 반면에,
FA 는 사진의 노출 패턴을 자주 사용되는 촬영상황 데이터베이스의 것과 비교를 해줌으로써 촬영하는 사람에게 더 빠른 정보제공 뿐만 아니라 궁극적으로 촬영하는 사람을 위해 생각하기 시작하는 것이었다.



Nikon's approach was the one　　 that would prevail among future 35mm and digital SLRs.
Nikon 의 방식이 그 후의 35mm 나 디지털 카메라에 더 쓰이게 된다.



Among the few cameras to have a multi-spot metering system after the OM-4 were the Hasselblad 205 FCC and the Rollei 6008, some of the most expensive medium format cameras.
OM-4 의 멀티스팟 노출씨스템 이후, 이 방식을 채택한 카메라들은 Hasselblad 205FC 와 Rollei 6008, 그리고 몇몇 최고급 중형카메라들이었다.

다른 메이커들이 모두 Autofocus 방식으로 전환한 이후에도 Olympus 는 Autofocus 방식으로 가지 않고 OM-4 라인을 유지하지만, 결국 2002년 (!) OM-4 는 무대 뒤로 사라지게 된다.
하지만, OM-4 는 세월이 흐르면서 프로들과 비평가들에 의해 당대의 가장 신뢰도 높고 성능 좋은 카메라였었다고 재평가되고 있다.



아, 이 글을 쓰다보니 무길도 한량은 OM-4 의 가장 큰 특색을 이용해보지도 못하고 사진들을 찍었다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. --;;
멀티스팟 노출을 위해 사용되는 단추들은 건드려보지도 않은 채, 철저하게 중앙집중 노출방식으로만 이 아침내내 사진을 찍었다.
좋은 카메라가 있으면 뭐하나?
쓸 줄을 모르는데......--;;
